Parowan Stake minutes, 1855.

Photocopy of minutes recorded by James H. Martineau at Parowan, Utah, in 1855, and kept using the Deseret Alphabet. The minutes, kept at Church meetings, record various community issues brought before stake president John Calvin Lazelle Smith (1822-1855), including excommunications and plans for the future of the Parowan Stake. Includes frequent references to George Albert Smith, Brigham Young, and Erastus Snow. The record also includes a brief history of the Mormon Church. Also included is a typescript of the Martineau manuscript made by Joseph Robert Bingham in 1981, with notes on the transcription. (32 pages) Also included are three copies of keys to the Deseret alphabet and two letters regarding the Martineau manuscript from Chad Flake (Curator of Special Collections at Brigham Young University) to Joseph Robert Bingham, dated 1981.

James Henry Martineau was born in Montgomery County, New York, on March 13, 1828. He came to Salt Lake City in 1850, on his way to the gold fields of California. He intended to stop in Utah only for a few months, but after his conversion to Mormonism, he decided to remain and help to colonize the area, becoming one of the founders of the town of Parowan, in Iron County, and an early settler of Logan, in Cache County.
